Project Details

The Route 21/78, Sections 2N & 5CK project located in Newark, NJ, involves the construction of approximately 1 mile of new bridges to replace a portion of the heavily traveled Route 21 highway. Under this contract we will also install a connecting ramp between the proposed Route 21 Viaduct and the existing Route 78 Interstate. The tie-in of these ramps require us to widen portions of the existing Route 78 bridge.

The Route 21 structure consists of 19 new continuous curved structural steel spans up to 280 feet long. The connecting ramp and Route 78 include 43 shorter steel spans.

The new Route 21 structure spans over many Conrail lines as well as the active Amtrak Northeast Corridor. Therefore many construction operations require extensive coordination with these railroads.
Pier footings, columns, caps and bridge decks consist of poured in place concrete. All foundations are supported on 18” and 24” concrete filled steel pipe piles. Many of the excavations for the footings required steel sheeting, due to the close proximity to in-service, high-speed rail lines.

The project also involved road construction, drainage, and numerous utility relocations.

The project was completed on time and within budget.
