Project Details

The Route 1& 9 Section 2AG project is located in Newark, New Jersey on one of the heaviest traveled sections of roadway in the Northeast. The project site is located between the Pulaski Skyway and the Newark International Airport. The project involves the demolition and the construction of a new southbound bridge structure, as well as rehabilitation of several existing bridge decks.

The new southbound viaduct consists of 52 spans, with an average span length of 100 feet. The new viaduct spans over existing roadways, buildings, and Conrail lines. The three longest spans are constructed with steel plate girders, while the remaining 49 spans are constructed using prestressed concrete beams. The 51 footings, columns and pier caps are all reinforced concrete. Approximately half of the footings are constructed on steel H-Piles driven to rock, while the remaining are spread footings. The majority of the bridge construction was performed adjacent to Conrail’s freight line and Amtrak’s 138kv transmission. Sheeted excavations were required adjacent to all rail operations.

The project required the development of a Health and Safety Plan and the implementation of a Soil Reuse Plan for contaminated soils. The project also involved a great deal of road construction, drainage, utility relocations, and paving.

The project was completed on time and under budget.
