Project Details

This project involved demolition of an existing NJ Transit Rail Station platform and reconstruction of a new high-level platform along both northbound and southbound rails. The project was completed in four stages in order to keep the station operational throughout construction activities. Extensive coordination was required between NJ Transit and Harms Construction in order to minimize any impacts to the rail passengers.

The majority of the platform construction was located near the existing operational tracks, so much of the work had to be done during permitted track outages. The new platform was supported by a structural steel frame on top of precast concrete foundations. In an effort to minimize track outages, and maximize efficiency, the foundations were precast offsite for faster installation. Similarly, the platform was constructed using precast concrete panels, with the wearing surface poured in place.

Several amenities were installed under contract work for passenger comfort and convenience such as shelters, glass windscreens, information displays, benches, trashcans, and ticket vending machines. State of the art communications and security equipment was implemented in order to monitor the station and keep passengers informed with real-time information. A steel canopy was also erected to protect passengers from varying weather conditions. The canopy spanned nearly the length of the northbound platform and a portion of the southbound platform as well. Unique to the southbound platform was a retractable edge that allows the track to accommodate wider freight trains.

Both platforms were made handicap accessible by ramps at either end, with the northbound platform receiving a third ramp in the middle, adjacent to accessible parking. This project was completed on time and within budget.
