Project Details

The scope of this project involved the construction of a new bypass highway crossing over the Amtrak mainline, through an undeveloped area, and intersecting with US Route 1.

The roadwork activities included site clearing, grading and stockpiling, roadway excavation, wet excavation, and borrow excavation. There was also a new drainage system installed for the length of the highway.

This drainage system included new pipes, manholes, chambers, headwalls and the reconstruction and modification of some existing facilities. The project also involved the jacking of drainage pipes in place. Also included was traffic signalization and landscaping.

The construction of the new bypass required a bridge over Amtrak’s mainline. This structure consisted of steel stringers supporting a reinforced concrete slab. All footings for the abutments are supported on steel H-Piles. The excavations for these footings, adjacent to Amtrak, required steel sheeting and shoring.

Several Amtrak catenary and signal structures were modified for the new bridge alignment. This contract included new foundation construction and pole relocations. This required strict compliance with Amtrak safety and work regulations, and coordination with their work forces. The project was completed on time and within budget.
