This project involved the construction in two phases of a new Rt. 35 bridge over Matawan Creek in the Borough of Keyport and the demolition and removal of the existing Rt. 35 lift bridge.
The project involved construction over a tidal and navigable waterway as well as the adjacent wetland area. The new bridge approach was comprised of 16″ steel pipe piles with poured in place concrete caps. The span over the navigable channel was constructed between two massive concrete piers which utilized a precast concrete cofferdam for its base section supported on pipe piles.
Approach spans are concrete decks on precast concrete beams whereas the spans over the navigable water were concrete decks on steel girders. The bridge was constructed in two stages. Concrete sheeting was installed between the stages to account for the differential elevation of roadways.
All bridge construction was performed in environmentally sensitive wetland areas and in full compliance with Army Corp of Engineers and NJDEP permits. Coordination of traffic control and staging was particularly difficult on this project. The existing bridge demolition took place adjacent to the active new roadway. Special precautions were implemented to protect the traveling public as well as the navigational traffic.
This project was completed on time and within budget.
