The Rt. 295, Section 7G project was a major piece of the NJDOT’s overall plan to link Rt. 295 with Rt. 195 near Trenton. This segment of work constructed a new Rt. 295 from just north of Kuser Road to the proposed Rt. 295/195 Interchange.
The construction of this highway involved major wetland excavation, dewatering operations, mass deep excavations, and mass embankments. The proposed alignment crossed three major existing roadways requiring the construction of three new bridges.
Each bridge consisted of a 2 span, concrete deck slab, supported by simple span steel stringers. Extensive traffic control and excavation supports were required at each intersection. The new bridges were built in stages to allow continuous traffic.
At the southern limit of the project, the highway rose on 750,000 cubic yards of embankment to meet the proposed Rt.295/195 Interchange. An extensive drainage system was installed beneath the embankments, approximately 20 feet below the original grade.
Seven retaining walls were constructed along this section of the highway, four of which had wooden noise walls attached to concrete parapets. The project also involved 150,000 cubic yards of wet excavation and backfill. The project was completed on time and within budget.
