On June 13, 1985 George Harms Construction was awarded the contract to complete taxiway replacement work and runway extensions at the FAA Technical Center Airport, Pomona, NJ. The contract was divided into three (3) different work stages. Each stage had a very tight time constraint.
The areas constructed under this contract were runway 4/22 and taxiways A, D, & H. Each area required extensive removal and replacement of materials. The majority of the removals were existing bituminous and concrete pavements. Once the pavements and other related items were removed, replacement concrete runways were constructed.
Construction included drainage manholes, inlets and piping. Work also included the connection of these systems to the existing drainage throughout the airport. Also constructed were the underground conduits, handholes, ducts, and wiring for the new runway lighting systems
The new bituminous and concrete pavements were required to meet the special standards set for airport construction. Not only did these standards govern the materials, but also required specific construction methods and equipment. The project was completed on time and within budget.
