This project site is located in Newark, NJ on, and adjacent to the property of the Newark International Airport. This Guideway Foundation contract was awarded to Harms Construction to build several new concrete foundations and pedestals for the Newark Airport Monorail extension. This extension expanded the current monorail system to cross the Rt. 1 & 9 highway and proceed to the existing Amtrak Northeast Corridor.
Several types of construction operations were required to complete this project. Fifty-four (54) separate concrete foundations & pedestals were constructed for the proposed steel superstructure. All of these foundations are supported on 12 ¾” concrete filled steel pipe piles, which were vibrated and driven into place. We also constructed a 6’x12’ concrete culvert and a 600’ long precast retaining wall for the access road that was constructed under this contract.
Most operations were completed while working in the median of a heavily traveled highway, and adjacent to high-speed rail lines. Crane operations and crane heights were modified due to the close proximity to the airport runway and respective flight patterns. High voltage overhead power lines for the railroad also affected crew operations and work procedures.
The project required the development of a Health and Safety Plan and the implementation of a Soil Reuse Plan for contaminated soils, including disposal of contaminated material.
The project was completed on time and under budget.
