Project Details

The work associated with this contract had several different aspects: bridge demolition, Amtrak electrification modifications, roadway work, and new bridge construction. All work required extensive coordination due to the close proximity with the Amtrak mainline. The project location required all of the work be performed under detailed Work Plans, and with the use of specific equipment, to protect the existing railroad.

Once the removal and relocation of Amtrak’s electrification services were complete, construction could begin on the new bridge. The proposed bridge, and existing structure, crossed over the Amtrak mainline and spur track. The new bridge was completed before the existing bridge was demolished.

The new structure consisted of steel stringers supporting a reinforced concrete deck slab. The bridge had four spans, with an average span length of 110’. The stringers were supported on reinforced concrete piers. The excavations for the pier footings adjacent to the Amtrak mainline, required extensive sheeting for support of the railroad loads.
Under this contract Harms was responsible for removal of existing Amtrak poles and guy anchors and the supply and installation of all new Amtrak catenary poles. The project was completed on time and with budget.
