Project Details

This project involved the construction of a new interchange at milepost #69 of the Garden State Parkway located in the environmentally sensitive Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey. Prior to construction, there was only a NB exit and SB entrance from Rt. 532. The new interchange has all NB & SB entrance and exits for the local traveling public. These new ramps required widening of the Parkway mainline, which passes under Ocean County Route 532.

A major part of the project included replacing two bridge structures, one over NB and one over SB, to accommodate the widened mainline. The existing structures were systematically demolished over the mainline with intense coordination and safety measures in-place. The bridges were constructed in two stages so that existing traffic patterns could be maintained. Both new structures are supported upon 16″ diameter pipe piles and cast-in-place concrete substructures. The superstructure includes simple span steel girders with cast-in place concrete decks and parapets comprised of High Performance Concrete.

The new interchange also included two-toll plazas and administration buildings at the NB Entrance and SB Exit Ramps. Harms completed the majority of building construction with our own forces including the architectural masonry work that envelopes the buildings. The new toll plazas were constructed with precast toll islands; concrete pedestrian tunnels beneath the plazas, and structural steel canopies. This project was completed on time and within budget.
